The air quality in 338 Chinese cities showed improvement in the first three quarters of the year, said the Ministry of Environmental Protection Thursday.
The average density of PM2.5, fine particulate matter that causes smog, stood at 43 micrograms per cubic meter during the January-September period, down 8.5 percent year on year.
During the first nine months, 338 cities enjoyed good air quality on 80.3 percent of days, an increase of 2.6 percentage points.
The 25 cities along the Yangtze River Delta recorded 74.5 percent of days with good air quality, while the ratio in nine cities along the Pearl River Delta was 90.1 percent, both improved on the same period of 2015.
However, six out of the 10 cities with the worst air quality were still in Hebei Province, an area adjoining Beijing, said the ministry.
The city of Haikou in Hainan Province, southern China, continued to have the cleanest air out of the nation's 74 major cities, while Xingtai in Hebei Province was the most polluted. Endi
