Xinhua, October 12, 2016 Adjust font size:

Rafael Nadal was stunned 6-3, 7-6 (3) by Viktor Troicki in the second round of the 2016 Shanghai Masters here on Wednesday evening.

The 14-time Grand Slam champion told reporters that Troicki played better.

In the previous five head-to-head matches, Nadal only surrendered one set to Troicki.

"I played against a player that his serve was huge during the whole time. He deserved to win more than me," Nadal said.

The fourth seed admitted the impact from the injury. "It's difficult to be satisfied when you come back without practice and have to compete at another important event without having practice and matches."

Nadal said, "Now his motivation is to be 100 percent ready for the beginning of the next season."

"The only thing that I can say is I'm gonna do and I' m gonna try my best in every single moment to make that thing happen," he added.

In other matches, second seed Andy Murray of Britain had a comfortable 6-3, 6-2 victory over American Steve Johnson, setting up a meeting with another American, John Isner, in the next round.

US Open champion Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland claimed a straight-set win over Kyle Edmund of Britain 6-3, 6-4. Wu Di of China fell to French player Gilles Simon. Endit
