ASEAN member states call for tighter cybersecurity coordination

ASEAN member states called for closer cybersecurity cooperation, stronger coordination of regional cybersecurity capacity building initiatives, and strengthening discussions with a specific focus on cybersecurity during the ASEAN Ministerial Conference on Cybersecurity (AMCC) here on Tuesday.

Taking into account the multi-disciplinary nature of cybersecurity, ASEAN member states agreed on the need to identify an appropriate ASEAN platform for discussing regional cybersecurity strategy and cooperation.

Built on the Meeting of the ASEAN Telecommunications and IT Ministers (TELMIN), AMCC converged in Singapore as part of the inaugural Singapore International Cyber Week 2016, which lasts from Monday to Wednesday.

During the meeting, ASEAN member states recognized the value of gatherings like the Singapore-hosted AMCC, which brought together ministers from the telecommunications and other relevant sectors from across the region, according to a press release by Cyber Security Agency of Singapore on Tuesday night.

Furthermore, ASEAN member states agreed on the value of developing a set of practical cybersecurity norms of behavior in the region.

Singapore's Minister for Communications and Information and Minister-in-charge of Cybersecurity Yaacob Ibrahim stressed it is crucial for ASEAN member states to work together to build a secure and resilient cyberspace.

At the opening of AMCC, Yaacob announced that Singapore will launch a 10-million-Singapore dollar (7.25 million U.S. dollars) ASEAN Cyber Capacity Program (ACCP) to help fund various efforts to deepen cyber capacities across ASEAN member states.

To be launched in April 2017 and utilized over five years, ACCP will provide the resource to broaden the scope of capacity building activities and better hone technical skills and incident response. Endit
