Spanish treasury places 5.789 bln USD on market

The Spanish treasury on Tuesday placed treasury bills with a value of 5.231 billion euros (5.789 billion U.S. dollars) on the market at negative interest rates.

The treasury exceeded expectations of placing between 4.5 and 5.5 billion euros.

A total of 4.681 billion euros worth of 12-month treasury bills carried an average interest rate of -0.248 percent as opposed to the -0.20 percent of the previous issue held in September.

The placement also included 550 million euros worth of six-month treasury bills that carried an average interest rate of -0.326 percent, which was below the -0.265 percent of the previous auction.

The treasury will hold another two auctions in October when it will place three and nine-month treasury bills as well as treasury bonds. (1 euro = 1.11 U.S. dollars) Endit
