Prosecutor refuses to exclude Spanish People's Party from corruption trial

A Spanish prosecutor on Monday rejected the petition made by the Spanish People's Party (PP) to be excluded from the Gurtel corruption trail.

In the Gurtel trial, which began last week, 37 people face charges in a wide-ranging cash-for favors corruption case.

Among those facing charges is former PP Treasurer Luis Barcenas, while the PP itself has been called to testify for allegedly benefiting from 245,000 euros (274,400 U.S. dollars) which "proceeded from bribery and corruption."

Lawyers representing the party argued that the PP should be excluded from the trial as it was the party's municipal branches, rather than the party on a national level, which benefited from the money. The lawyer also alleged the accusations were "incomplete and imprecise."

Prosecutor Concepcion Sabadell, however, rejected the latter argument. Enditem
