Jordan opens major solar power plant

Xinhua, October 11, 2016 Adjust font size:

Jordanian Prime Minister Hani Mulki on Monday opened the country's first solar power plant, the state-run Petra news agency reported.

The prime minister said the plant is part of the country's strategy to diversify energy resources and increase reliance on renewable energy in Jordan.

At present, three percent of Jordan's electricity is generated via renewable energy and the country is working on a plan to increase its contribution to the energy mix to 10 percent by 2020.

Mulki said the total cost of the project is 170 million U.S. dollars.

On Sunday, photovoltaic manufacturer First Solar announced that it has completed the 52.5 megawatt (MW) AC Shams Ma'an project in Jordan.

Currently, Jordan imports about 97 percent of its energy resources. Endit
