Zambia set to open hunting season

Over 2,000 applicants bid for resident hunting licenses for about 1,095 animals available for this year's hunting season, the country's wildlife body said on Sunday.
The National Parks and Wildlife Department (NPWD) said this year's hunting season will run from October 10 to December 31 in various hunting blocks in Game Management Areas.
Constantine Hara, the chairperson of the Wildlife Licensing Committee said 2,301 applications for hunting licenses were received, of which 1,900 were shortlisted and 401 disqualified.
The wildlife body conducted a raffle draw on Saturday to determine which applications would get the hunting licenses, according to a statement released.
The chairperson said the decision to subject applicants to a raffle draw for the licenses was aimed at enhancing transparency, especially that the demand outstripped the available animals per animal hunting quota.
"We are aware of the fact that the demand for hunting licenses far outstrips the animal hunting quota, and in a bid to improve the perception of the mode of allocation of licenses, NPWD, through the wildlife licensing committee, approved the raffle selection criteria to be employed," he said.
Licensing, he said, was an important tool in the sustainable management of wildlife resource as enshrined in the Zambia Wildlife Act.
The department advertised for applications for licenses for this year's hunting season in August. Endit
