Suspected militants snatch 2 rifles from police post in Indian-controlled Kashmir

Xinhua, October 10, 2016 Adjust font size:

Suspected militants stormed a police post guarding members of minority Hindu community in restive Indian-controlled Kashmir and snatched two service rifles belonging to policemen deployed there, police said Sunday.

The militants attacked police post at Tumlahaal village of Lassipora in Pulwama district, about 43 km south of Srinagar city, the summer capital of Indian-controlled Kashmir.

"Last evening militants attacked a police post at Tumlahaal village, overpowering policemen and took away their two service rifles," a police official posted in Pulwama said. "The police post in the village is meant to guard the members of minority community."

However, the policemen were left unharmed.

Soon after the matter was brought to the notice of higher officials, contingents of police and paramilitary troopers were rushed to the place to launch a manhunt aimed at recovering the snatched weapons.

Police have started investigations into the matter.

On Friday evening, a policeman was killed and two others including a civilian were wounded after militants attacked a police post guarding minority community in neighboring Shopian district.

Last week militants snatched five service rifles belonging to policemen in a similar attack in the region.

Local government set up security posts for the protection of minority families and pro-India politicians in Muslim majority areas of the region, following the incidents of attack on them.

A surge in weapon snatching incident have been witnessed in the region. However, so far no militant outfit has claimed responsibility of weapon snatching.

Militants occasionally target police and paramilitary troopers in Indian-controlled Kashmir.

A guerrilla war is going on between militants and Indian troopers stationed in the region since 1989. However, of late Indian policemen too have been trained to fight them. Endit
