The Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the University of Ghana have started talks to establish academic programs in sports, particularly football, the GFA President Kwesi Nyantakyi announced here Tuesday evening.
The two institutions took the step because there is a huge gap in research, knowledge in Ghana and Africa football in academia and as such the university will be offering courses in football administration, marketing, law, media, event organization, refereeing, coaching and many more to add professionalism to the game, he told reporters at the launch of the university's football league.
He said the GFA will play a key role in the planning and management of the league which commences on Oct.12 at the university campus in Accra to help develop football talents.
"Since the referees are students, our referees department will also train them to become professionals," said Nyantakyi, who was voted into the FIFA council last week.
The Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu was thankful for the partnership and said it is a major uplift for the game.
Nyantakyi has been appointed to serve on the University' s sports advisory board, the highest decision-making body of the sports directorate at Ghana's premier university. Endit
