Egypt foils infiltration attempt of 93 people into Libya

Xinhua, October 5, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Egyptian border security forces foiled on Wednesday an infiltration attempt of 89 Egyptians and four Sudanese into Libya through the Egyptian western borders, official MENA news agency reported.

Despite the turmoil and growing militant groups including affiliates of the regional Islamic State (IS) group, Libya is an ideal destination for thousands of Egyptian workers, particularly those employed in the construction field.

In August, Egypt's Marsa Matrouh border province received 23 Egyptian workers after they had been freed from abduction by a Libyan militant group for ransom.

Many Egyptians choose illegal attempts to flee the tight economic conditions in their country where unemployment rate hit 12.5 percent according to official reports.

Over 200 Egyptians drowned in the Mediterranean Sea in September while seeking to migrate to Italy via a boat that capsized off the country's northern coast. Endit
