Swiss air force event cancelled following spate of fatal crashes

Xinhua, October 5, 2016 Adjust font size:

Switzerland has cancelled an air force show scheduled to take place in Lucerne on Oct. 8 out of respect for three servicemen who lost their lives in two fatal accidents, the country's defence ministry said Tuesday.

This follows a similar decision taken at the end of last month to cancel an air force live fire event which was scheduled to take place at Axalp on Oct. 12 and 13.

Tuesday's decision comes after a Swiss air force Super Puma helicopter crashed at the Saint Gotthard Pass in the Swiss Alps on Sept. 28, killing both its pilots and seriously injuring a cabin crew member.

This accident comes just one month after a Swiss F/A 18 fighter jet crashed at the Susten Pass on Aug. 29, killing its 27-year-old pilot.

Two further incidents involving fighter jets took place in October 2015 and June this year, though in both cases the pilots were able to get out of the aircraft. Endit
