Big parties are winners in BiH local elections

Xinhua, October 4, 2016 Adjust font size:

According to the first preliminary and incomplete results announced by the Central Election Commission (CEC) of Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) on Monday, the two big parties in BiH are winners in the local elections held on Sunday.

In the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina (FBiH), the mainly Bosniak and Croat federation entity, the main Bosniak party, the Party of Democratic Action (SDA), looks like being the big winner. It declared victory in eight of the nine municipalities in Sarajevo canton.

Milorad Dodik, President of the Serb-dominated entity, Republika Srpska(RS), and leader of the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats(SNSD) claimed that his party had triumphed in RS, calling the as-yet unconfirmed results "a big, magnificent victory".

"The SNSD is the winner. Today's victory for SNSD in local elections is magnificent," Dodik said after the preliminary results were announced.

The turnout for Sunday's poll was 53.88 percent, according to the Central Election Commission of BiH, with 1,723,140 voters casting their ballots.

In accordance with the Dayton Agreement, BiH is made up of two entities, the FBiH and the RS.

In Sunday's local elections, voters have elected mayors and municipal councils across the two entities, 10 city councils -- four in the FBiH and six in the RS, and an assembly in Brcko District.

The CEC will announce new results Tuesday when preliminary results for municipal councils should be known as well. Endit
