Widespread student protests across the country showed signs of dying down on Saturday as students in Wits University in Johannesburg agreed to return to class.

Most students at Wits University voted to end protests through cellphone SMS, university management confirmed.

EDINBURGH -- Eighteen people were taken to hospital after a coach carrying supporters of football team Rangers overturned in East Ayrshire in south central Scotland on Saturday, police said.

Three were seriously hurt after the crash happened at about 1:15 p.m. local time (1215 GMT) near Kilmarnock, reported the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), quoting the police. (Britain-Scotland-Coach Crash)

RAMALLAH -- Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas said late on Saturday night that the Palestinian hands are still extended for peace with Israel after Israel closed the doors for dialogue.

"Neither they (Israelis) eliminate us nor we eliminate them ... they have their state and we do have ours," Abbas told a conference held on Saturday in the West Bank city of Bethlehem. (Palestine-Israel-Peace)

BAGHDAD -- Terrorist acts, violence and armed conflicts killed 1,003 Iraqis and wounded 1,159 others in September across Iraq, the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) said on Saturday.

The figures included 609 civilians killed and 951 wounded, with 394 security members killed and 208 wounded, the UNAMI said in a statement. (Iraq-Death Toll)

CAIRO -- At least five police conscripts were shot dead Saturday by unknown gunmen in Arish city of Egypt's restive North Sinai province bordering Israel and the Palestinian Gaza Strip, the Egyptian Interior Ministry said.
