Ghana FA boss voted into FIFA council

The President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Kwesi Nyantakyi, was on Thursday elected onto the expanded FIFA Council by the General Assembly of the Confederations of African Football (CAF) in Cairo.

Nyantakyi polled 31 votes to join Guinea's Almamy Kabele, CAF's second Vice President, who garnered 37 votes to secure the two African places on the new-look FIFA council.

Madagascar's Ahmad missed out narrowly with 30 votes while Senegal's Augustin Senghor polled nine votes.

Nyantakyi, who is also a member of the CAF executive committee, becomes the first ever Ghanaian to be elected to the highest board of world football governing body, FIFA.

The gathering of CAF's 54-member association was called to vote the two new members in before the new 36-member FIFA Council holds its first meeting on October 13 and 14.

The new FIFA Council replaces the erstwhile FIFA Executive Committee, which was disbanded following recent reforms in FIFA. Endit
