EU has 27 mln people aged 80 or above in 2015

Xinhua, September 29, 2016 Adjust font size:

The ageing European Union (EU) saw millions more silver-hair people than 10 years ago, official data showed on Thursday.

Last year witnessed some 27 million people aged 80 or more living in the bloc, 7 million more than in 2005, said Eurostat, the bloc's statistical agency. The increase helped lift their share to 5.3 percent in 2015 from 4 percent 10 years ago.

Moreover, life expectancy grew to record 9.5 years in 2014 for those at the age of 80, more than the 8.4 years in 2004, contributing to the current ageing of population structure, said the agency.

Women still accounted for around two-thirds of elderly people, although their proportion shrank between 2005 and 2015, a common scenario seen in all EU member states, the agency added.

Eurostat's publication came days before the International Day of Older Persons, which falls on October 1 each year. Endit
