At least five people were killed and two others injured in a road mishap in the northeastern Indian state of Assam Wednesday, a senior police official said.
"The mishap took place when a car with all laborers on board rammed into a truck that had turned turtle on National Highway 37 at Dharatul in the state's Morigaon district," he said, on condition of anonymity.
As the injured laborers were trying to come out of the car, another speeding truck hit it, thus sandwiching the vehicle, the official said, adding the two injured have been admitted to a local hospital.
A probe has been ordered into the accident, which hauled up traffic in the area for over four hours, he said. "The driver of both the trucks fled the spot and efforts are on to nab them," the official added.
India has the highest rate of road accidents in the world, with over 130,000 people killed every year, according to official statistics. Endit
