China wishes Chirac and his wife a quick recovery

A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson on Friday wished former French President Jacques Chirac and former First Lady Bernadette Chirac a quick recovery.

It was reported that Chirac is still in the hospital in Paris after suffering a lung infection over the weekend, and his wife Bernadette Chirac was also hospitalized on Wednesday "to rest and recuperate."

Chirac is widely respected in China, spokesperson Lu Kang said, adding that he is also a good friend of the Chinese people.

Chirac was France's president between 1995 and 2007. He started his career as a high-level civil servant. The center-right lawyer was prime minister under the Socialist President Francois Mitterrand. Prior to that, he was in charge of the interior ministry and agriculture portfolios during President Georges Pompidou's time in office in the 1970s. Endit
