Austria hoping for "speedy solutions" at European asylum summit: chancellor

Xinhua, September 23, 2016 Adjust font size:

With Austria set to host a European asylum summit here on Saturday, Austrian Chancellor Christian Kern is hoping for "speedy solutions" to key issues.

The summit, titled "Migration along the Balkan route," is to include leaders along the Balkans route, with EU migration commissioner Dimitris Avramopoulos also in attendance, and European Council President Donald Tusk reportedly also likely to be present.

In an interview with the Austria Press Agency on Thursday to discuss the summit, Kern said dealing with the issues of protection of the EU outer borders as well as assistance in problem regions needed to be sped up.

"One cannot be satisfied with the pace that has been set up to now," he said.

He noted that while he expected "different positions" from the various attendees at the summit, it was important to bring all affected parties from along the Balkans route together for discussions.

He also hoped the Vienna summit would apply pressure and accelerate finding solutions. Endit
