Cypriot president urges implementation of sustainable development agenda

Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades called Thursday for the implementation of sustainable development blueprint to address multiple challenges including poverty, hunger, conflicts that plague the world.

The president made the appeal at the high-level debate of UN General Assembly that entered into its third day at the UN headquarters.

"The universal, comprehensive and indivisible 2030 agenda for sustainable development represents ... our guiding tool to tackle effectively the universal challenge that transcend boundaries and threaten regional and internal cohesion," he said.

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) could transform the world for the benefit of humankind, Anastasiades added.

The SDGs were unanimously adopted by world leaders in September 2015 to serve as the blueprint for global development efforts in the years leading up to 2030. The 17 goals aim to end poverty, fight inequalities and tackle climate change, while leaving no one behind.

Over 140 world leaders are gathering in New York to attend this year's general debate which runs through Sept. 26. This year's theme for the General Assembly is "The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs): A Universal Push to Transform our World." Endit
