Spaniard dies in climbing accident in Nepal

A climber from the region of Navarre in the north of Spain was among three people killed in a climbing accident in the region of Mount Manaslu in Nepal, the Regional Government of Navarre confirmed on Thursday.

The Spaniard, who died in a rock-fall along with two Sherpas, has been identified as Adolfo Ripa Arizala.

He formed part of a group of 15 Spanish trekkers, who were accompanied by four Sherpas in the region in the Himalayan mountain range in the west-central part of Nepal.

A number of 10 of the trekkers are reported to have suffered different degrees of injury during the rock-fall and have been evacuated to hospital in Katmandu by helicopter.

The Spaniards were part of a group which was organized by the tour operator Naturtrek, a Spanish company which specializes in trekking an adventure holidays. They had been in the region for a week and were due to return to Spain on Oct. 7.

The Spanish media reports that the regional government of Navarre and the Spanish Foreign Ministry have been in contract with the group, through the Spanish consul and also the Spanish Embassy in New Delhi, while the government of Navarre has contacted the family of the victim and set up a telephone hotline for the families of other members of the expedition.
