S. African leader urges restraint from conflicting parties in DR Congo

South African President Jacob Zuma on Thursday urged all parties in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to exercise restraint and take urgent steps to end the violence.

Zuma said he is concerned over the violent incidences that took place in the past few days in the DRC, resulting in the deaths of people and destroy of properties.

"These incidences threaten the hard-won democratic gains made by the DRC through the past two elections," Zuma said. "All parties should restore the protection given to the people of DRC through its Constitution."

He called on all the parties in the DRC to participate in the Inclusive National Dialogue, as facilitated by the African Union (AU) and supported by regional and international institutions.

The dialogue is aimed at bringing peace in the DRC, and adopting of a roadmap to national elections.

South Africa, which has partnered with the DRC for the past two and half decades, continues to provide support to the people of the DRC to achieve lasting and sustainable peace, security and development, said Zuma.

At least 32 people were killed in the violence witnessed in the DRC between Sept.19 and 20, according to the police. Endit
