Djibouti launches major housing project

Xinhua, September 19, 2016 Adjust font size:

Djibouti President Ismail Omar Guelleh on Sunday announced the launch of a major construction project that will see 20,000 housing units constructed.

Speaking during an interview with Djibouti's state broadcaster, Guelleh said the project is aimed at guaranteeing decent housing for all.

"I am determined to achieve our goal of providing decent housing for all our fellow citizens," he said, adding that "this was one of his campaign promises."

He said the accomplishment of the project will be funded through concessions with multiple partners from Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Morocco, China and other financial institutions.

He said most of the houses will be distributed to Djiboutian nationals who receive a salary and who will be able to make monthly repayment.

However, the president also noted that some houses will be distributed to disabled people as well as those who work in the informal sector.

"Houses for the last category of recipients will be acquired through a Housing Fund to ensure each of our citizen has a chance of being part of this program that is aimed at providing every citizen with modest housing," Guelleh reiterated.

The president finally urged his fellow citizens "to provide the necessary support to ensure this noble project is successful." Endit
