At least 10 people were killed and more than 20 others feared drowned after a private passenger bus fell into a pond in the eastern Indian state of Bihar Monday, a senior police official said.

"The incident took place at Basaitha in the state's Madhubani district. The bus, carrying some 65 passengers, rolled into a roadside pond after the driver lost control of the vehicle," he said.

While 10 bodies have been fished out, 20 others are feared drowned, while some managed to swim to safety, the official said.

State Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has expressed grief over the incident and ordered a probe.

Over 150,000 people die in road accidents in India every year, as per official figures. Endit
