France hails Britain's decision to go ahead with Hinkley Point project

Xinhua, September 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

French Finance Minister Michel Sapin on Thursday hailed Britain's decision to approve the French utility company EDF's project to build two EPR reactors at Hinkley Point in southern England.

"This marks a major milestone in Franco-British industrial and energy cooperation," Sapin said in a statement.

Sapin called the project "good news for the French nuclear industry," and "an important contribution to support employment in France."

Earlier on Thursday, the British government decided to give the green light to the country's first nuclear power plant in two decades after it had put the nuclear project on hold in July to better assess its advantages.

EDF applauded Britain's okay for the plant's construction which it said will "mark the relaunch of nuclear plants in Europe."

"EDF group will work vigorously with its longstanding partner, the Chinese electricity producer CGN, to guarantee the success of this project, serving the United Kingdom," it added. Endit
