Namibia to host int'l sevens rugby tournament

Xinhua, September 15, 2016 Adjust font size:

Namibia will host the second Safland Sevens Rugby Tournament from Nov. 12 to 13 at the coastal town of Swakopmund.

The announcement was made on Thursday, at a press briefing, where the Namibia Rugby Union said this year's invitations were extended to the national teams from the United States, Argentina, Germany, Kenya, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Tournament organizer Willem Strauss said that this year's tournament will also include a club competition for teams from Namibia and clubs from South Africa.

"To add move flavour, a sevens schools tournament will run parallel to the international competition. There will also be a Rugby skills Development program with 400 children expected to participate," he added.

According to Elizma Theron, acting CEO of the NRU, the tournament has the potential to boost sevens rugby in Namibia.

Furthermore, the tournament is also set to be an ideal platform for a number of world series teams to hone their skills for the upcoming the HSBC World Rugby Sevens slated later in November.

The South African team were last year winners in the Safland tournament and are set to be favourites this year following their Bronze medal win at the ended Rio Olympics. Enditem
