26,000 people in BiH directly affected by landslides: UNDP

Some 26,000 people in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) are directly affected by landslides, Sezin Sinanoglu, Resident Representative of UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) in BiH said here on Thursday.

Sinanoglu made the remarks at the closing ceremony of the project and the presentation of the study of risk management of landslides in BiH.

She stressed that studies on climate change show that the Balkans will be significantly influenced by climate change and that the weather conditions in BiH will be more extreme so that the vulnerability of BiH in this regard is at a high level.

The author of the study Biljana Abolmasov explained that the study was aimed at the methodological manner of problem-solving of landslides in BiH.

"People need to be aware of spatial urban plans in the areas where they want to build their facilities. They should ask for recommendations from people in the appropriate profession that they can build something or not, and if there is a landslide, they should invite experts to repair the affected area," explained Abolmasov.

Abolmasov expressed the hope that this study will provide guidance to state institutions in BiH on how to manage the risk of landslides. Endit
