1st Ld: 45 national lawmakers disqualified for electoral fraud

Xinhua, September 13, 2016 Adjust font size:

China's top legislature on Tuesday confirmed the disqualification of 45 deputies from Liaoning Province for their involvement in electoral fraud.

A report by the National People's Congress (NPC) credentials committee said it believes that acts by the 45 deputies violated the electoral law and thus their election should be nullified by the NPC Standing Committee.

An NPC Standing Committee session that closed on Tuesday afternoon voted to unseat the 45 NPC deputies, elected from the Liaoning Provincial People's Congress, for vote buying and bribery during the election in 2013.

A previous NPC Standing Committee chairpersons' meeting, presided over by Zhang Dejiang, chairman of the NPC Standing Committee, set the date and agenda for Tuesday's session. The purpose set for Tuesday's session was to "implement decisions of the Communist Party of China Central Committee regarding electoral fraud in Liaoning, and fulfill the duties of the NPC Standing Committee."

The NPC Standing Committee session usually convenes every two months, but provisional sessions may be called whenever necessary. Endi
