HDZ wins relative majority in Croatian early election: electoral commission

The Croatian Democratic Union (HDZ) was the relative winner in Sunday's early parliamentary election, according to the complete results released by the State Electoral Commission (DIP) on Monday.

HDZ won 61 seats in the 151-seat parliament after counted all votes, Branko Hrvatin, the chairman of DIP said at a press conference.

The People's Coalition, led by opposition the Social Democratic Party (SDP), gained 54 seats, while Bridge party got 13, and the small parties' coalition "only option" won eight, he said.

The turnout was 52.59 percent, about 10 percent lower than the last election in November 2015.

An early election was called after a coalition government between HDZ and MOST stepped down in June following a no-confidence vote. Endit
