Albania to approve new railway code, aiming at revitalizing the sector

Xinhua, September 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Albanian transport ministry has sent a draft of a new code to parliament for approval regarding revitalizing and developing the railway sector, sources from the ministry said Wednesday.

The new code focuses on the development and improvement of safety while also planning to offer market access by establishing authorities on railway safety, regulation, licensing and rail accident investigation, the sources told local media Wednesday.

One of the main goals of this new code is to link the Albanian railway system with the Albanian ports. It is connected with the port of Durres but the ministry is seeking to create a link with the ports of Vlora and Shengjin.

Another goal is to build a railway with Macedonia.

Sides from both countries are to start coordinating planning attempts for potential connections between Durres and Skopje in the framework of the Albania-Macedonia-Bulgaria corridor.

Improvements in the rail network with Montenegro are considered crucial, the Albanian transport ministry said in its report accompanying the new code.

According to the transport ministry sources, the new code should be voted on at the beginning of this parliamentary session. Endit
