Nigerian gov't dismisses reports on importing GM rice

Xinhua, September 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

Nigeria on Wednesday denied reports saying that it had imported genetically modified (GM) rice.

Reports circulating online had alleged that the government through a firm had flooded the nation's market with GM rice.

Rufus Ebegba, Director-General of the National Bio-safety Management Agency (NBMA), told a news conference in Abuja, the nation's capital, that there was no iota of truth in the report.

Ebegba said no GM rice had been imported or released officially into the country, noting that the government had banned the importation of rice and there was no indication that the ban had been lifted.

He added that the report was intended to cause unnecessary panic and called on Nigerians to disregard it. Endit
