Zambian court dismisses application to halt inauguration of president-elect

Xinhua, September 8, 2016 Adjust font size:

A Zambian court on Wednesday threw away an application by the main opposition leader who asked the court to restrain the country's chief judge from swearing in President-elect Edgar Lungu.

Hakainde Hichilema, leader of the United Party for National Development (UPND), and the party's vice president Geoffrey Mwamba on Monday asked the High Court to restrain the chief judge from swearing in Lungu who was declared winner of the August 11 polls until the determination of a case surrounding a Constitutional Court ruling.

But the court dismissed the application when the matter came up before Judge Chitabo, according to Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation, the state broadcaster.

The court has however ordered an inter-party hearing.

On Monday, the Constitutional Court dismissed the opposition leader's petition challenging the re-election of Lungu.

Lungu is set to be sworn in on Tuesday next week at the National Heroes Stadium in Lusaka, the country's capital. Endit
