Gov't forces recapture key district in northern Afghanistan

Xinhua, September 5, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Afghan government forces regained control of the strategically important Qala-e-Zal district in the northern Kunduz province from Taliban militants, the Interior Ministry saidn on Monday.

"The security forces launched massive offensive against armed rebels in Qala-e-Zal district on Sunday and recaptured it Monday morning and the enemies after suffering huge casualties fled the area," the ministry said.

Taliban militants overrun Qala-e-Zal district along the border with Tajikistan couple of weeks ago.

"The government forces won't allow the terrorists to gain ground in any part of the country to rule over the people," the Interior Ministry said.

Taliban militants, who are fighting the government forces in several parts of Kunduz and the neighboring Baghlan and Takhar provinces, are yet to make comment on the situation in Qala-e-Zal. Endit
