Lebanese minister calls on government to expel Syria's ambassador

Xinhua, September 5, 2016 Adjust font size:

Former Justice Minister of Lebanon Ashraf Rifi requested Sunday that Syria's ambassador to Lebanon be expelled, local media said.

According to the National News Agency, in addition to the request to the Cabinet to expel Ali Abdul Karim Ali, Syria's Ambassador to Lebanon, he also asked the government to dissolve a pro-Syrian party over the 2013 Tripoli mosque bombings.

Rifi made the request addressing the Interior Minister Nouhad Machnouk to dissolve the Arab Democratic Party and to take legal action against the pro-Syrian Islamic Unity Movement, saying it is operating illegitimately.

Rifi also asked that a complaint be filed against Damascus with the United Nations.

The request comes just two days after an investigative judge accused Syria of involvement in the Al-Salam and Al-Taqwa mosques twin bombings, which killed over 40 people and wounded hundreds others in August 2013.

Rifi had previously called on the Lebanese government to cut diplomatic ties with Damascus. Endit
