The 23-year-old Italian climber, Valerio Conte (Lampre) won the longest stage of this year's Tour of Spain (Vuelta de Espana) cycle race when he was first across the line in Urdax-Danxerinea.
The 213 kilometer stage which began in Bilbao was dominated by a breakaway group of 12 riders which took advantage of a passive peloton to open an unassailable lead on a day marked by a continued series of rolling climbs.
None of race leaders showed any interest in pursuit ahead of Saturday's decisive stage which includes 3 first category climb as well as the extra category Col de Aubisque and that allowed the escapees to duel it out.
Specialist climber Conte was able to break clear on the penultimate climb of the day and opened up an unassailable lead on the final climb, before descending to the finish line with a winning margin of just under a minute.
While the battle for the stage was being decided the peloton continued with its stately procession finally finishing over 33 minutes later with all of the leaders crossing the finish line with the same time to leave Nairo Quintana (Movistar) with a 54 second lead Chris Froome (Sky) in second and 1.04 over Alejandro Valverde (Movistar) in third.
