An absconding militant was killed during a raid by Bangladeshi security forces on a hideout of banned Islamist outfit Jamaatul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) in capital Dhaka on Friday night.

The suspect has been identified as the JMB trainer Jahangir Alam Murad.

"Murad was on the most wanted list and is considered to be a key JMB leader," said a police officer who preferred to be unnamed.

He said Murad managed to flee a raid last week in which Tamim Chowdhury, the suspected mastermind of deadly Dhaka cafe attack in July 1 that killed 22, was among those killed.

"He trained the Dhaka's Spanish cafe attackers," said the Dhaka Metropolitan Police official.

He said at least three people including two police officers have been rushed to a hospital with gunshot wounds.

He said the militants fired and lobbed hand-made grenades as policemen and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) members cordoned off a building on receipt of information that militants were hiding there.

In retaliation, police also fired at them. Endit
