Xinhua, September 3, 2016 Adjust font size:

A serving member of the British armed forces has been charged with terrorism offences, the country's Metropolitan Police said on Friday.

The 30-year-old soldier, Ciaran Maxwell, appeared on Friday at Westminster Magistrates' Court.

Maxwell was arrested at his base in Taunton last week, and is charged with a series of offences, including obtaining items to be used in explosives, according to the Metropolitan Police.

The soldier is also facing charges of possession of cannabis and articles in connection with fraud.

After the court hearing, Maxwell was remanded in custody and is scheduled to appear in court again on Monday. Endit
