1st LD Writethru: Magnitude 4.9 quake jolts Japan's Kumamoto Pref., no tsunami warning issued

An earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.9 jolted Kumamoto Prefecture, on Japan's Kyushu island, on Wednesday evening, the weather agency here said.

According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), the temblor, which struck at 7:46 p.m. local time, registered lower 5 on Japan's seismic intensity scale which peaks at 7.

The quake's epicenter was located at a latitude of 32.7 degrees north and a longitude of 130.6 degrees east at a depth of 10 kilometers.

No tsunami warning has been issues, the JMA said. Endit
