Ghana prepares for Rwanda nation's cup qualifier

Xinhua, August 31, 2016 Adjust font size:

Ghana's senior national soccer team, the Black Stars, on Tuesday afternoon began their preparation for the final Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match against the Amavubi of Rwanda.

Fourteen players out of the 23 invited by head coach Avram Grant took part in the team's first training at the Accra Sports Stadium. The remaining nine players are expected to arrive in Ghana later on Wednesday.

The encounter will only serve academic purposes with Ghana having already sealed qualification for next year's tournament, topping Group H with 13 points so far from five games played, seven points more than second-placed Rwanda.

Ghana coach Grant will use the game as a rehearsal for the 2018 Russia world cup qualifying tie against Uganda on Oct.3.

Mozambique will play host to Mauritius in the other Group H clash in Maputo.

The 2017 edition of the AFCON will be hosted by Gabon from Jan.21 to Feb.12. Endit
