Over 60 tons of cannabis seized in Morocco in 2015: report

Xinhua, August 25, 2016 Adjust font size:

Moroccan customs seized more than 60 tons of cannabis in 2015, local media have reported.

Most of the cannabis was seized from the north and south of the kingdom, the L'Economiste daily reported on Wednesday.

In the north, 27.4 tons were seized at the Moroccan-Spanish border crossing point of Bab Sebta, while in the south, 23 tons was seized, a whopping jump from the 3 tons seized in 2014, the paper said.

Despite efforts in the past decade to crack down on cannabis harvesting, Morocco remains the world's largest producer of the cannabis resin.

According to the United Nations Office on Drug and Crime's 2016 World Drug Report, Morocco ranked first among 129 countries in terms of cannabis production from 2009 to 2014, followed by Afghanistan, Lebanon, India, and Pakistan. Endit
