Xinhua, August 22, 2016 Adjust font size:

Myanmar will hold a by-election in the beginning of 2017 to fill the vacant parliamentary seats, election officials said on Monday.

The parliamentary seats were left by those who became government leaders or officials in the 2015 general election, U Aung Myint, member of the Election Commission, told the press following the end of the day's session of the House of Nationalities (Upper House) in Nay Pyi Taw.

The number of vacant seats will be confirmed when time approaches, he said ,without giving a specific date.

Observers said there leaves roughly 31 parliamentary seats vacant, of which seven to the House of Representatives (Lower House) , three to the House of Nationalities (Upper House) and 21 in seven constituencies where election was unable to be held due to instability at that time.

Myanmar held a general election in November 2015 giving rise to the present government led by the National League for Democracy. Enditem
