A lorry driver has been detained for provoking a pile up involving 22 vehicles which cost the lives of two people and left a further 32 injured Thursday evening south of Madrid.

The Spanish Civil Guard confirmed on Friday that the driver of one of the three articulated lorries involved in the accident has been arrested on seven charges, two of dangerous driving and five of provoking injuries.

The accident happened in dry, clear weather when his lorry crashed into several vehicles parked at the side of the A4 highway south of Madrid, close to the town of Manzanares, as the result of an earlier incident in which a car has gone off the road.

It is thought the lorry driver had either suffered a loss of concentration or had not been following regulations and that is what caused him to plough into the stationary vehicles.

Five of the injured were described as in a serious condition, while the other 27 only suffered minor injuries.

Meanwhile the road was cut in the direction travelling to Madrid for four and a half hours as rescue services cleared away the debris, causing major retentions in traffic. Endit
