Swine fever outbreak declared in central Togo city

Xinhua, August 18, 2016 Adjust font size:

Togo's agriculture ministry on Thursday declared the outbreak of swine fever epidemic in Sokode, a city in the country's central region.

According to a release, the slaughtering of infected animals has commenced in affected areas since Wednesday.

Komlan Batawui, Director of National Livestock, said Koma II and Bamabodolo districts in Sokode city, about 420 km north to the capital Lome, are primarily experiencing the outbreak of the epidemic.

Batawui said the best way to prevent the spread of the epidemic is to slaughter the animals and create a crawl space.

"The slaughtering has already started and living animals in about 3 km radius around the concerned districts will be killed so as to prevent the spread of the disease," he said. Enditem
