First U.S. ambassador to Somalia assumes office

The Somali government on Tuesday welcomed Stephen M. Schwartz to his new post as the first U.S. Ambassador to the Horn of African nation since 1991.

A statement from the ministry of foreign affairs said the 58-year-old Schwartz's appointment is evidence of the further strengthening of bilateral relations between the two countries.

"The Government of the Federal Republic of Somalia seeks to strengthen bilateral ties with the USA further and enhance cooperation in all areas of mutual interest," the statement said. Endit
