Oscar Albeiro Figueroa Mosquera of Colombia won the men' s 62kg weightlifting gold medal at the Rio Olympic as he became the first male Olympic champion in his country.
Mosquera's gold medal was Colombia's third in Olympic history.
Mosquera, silver medalist at the London Olympics, snatched 142kg and jerked up 176kg for a winning total of 318kg for the top honor.
"This is the best thing I could have ever expected, for my country and for my family. I am just very happy," said the 33-year-old Mosquera.
Mosquera competed at the 2008 Olympic Games but failed to make a successful lift after injuring his right wrist.
"It was very, very hard. The four years following my silver medal in London 2012 were filled with a lot of preparation and effort, but it all ended with big results."
Eko Yuli Irawan of Indonesia, bronze medalist at London Games, got the silver medal with a total of 312kg and Farkhad Kharki of Kazakhstan took the bronze in 305kg.
"I am actually quite happy with my silver medal, but looking at my previous lifts from other competitions I could have done better," Irawan said.
"Even though I am disappointed, I am still proud of this medal. We are moving forward as a country with this medal."
World record holder Chen Lijun from China was forced to quit in the snatch due to calf cramps.
"Both of my legs were as stiff as stones. I even couldn't start the snatch," said the 23-year-old Chen.
"I was not nervous at all, and I don't think losing weight before the competition caused the cramp. I was confident about winning the gold," he added.
Earlier in the day, Sukanya Srisurat of Thailand lifted a total of 240kg in the women's 58kg weightlifting event to win the second gold medal for her country.
Her compatriot Pimsiri Sirikaew, silver medalist at the London Games, claimed her second silver medal with a total of 232kg and the bronze went to the Asian champion Kuo Hsing-Chun of Chinese Taipei with a total of 231kg. Enditem
