Slovenia rejects calls for suspending EU talks with Turkey

Xinhua, August 5, 2016 Adjust font size:

The Slovenian Foreign Ministry said on Friday that Slovenia is not changing its stance on the European Union (EU) negotiations with Turkey, responding to calls, especially from Austria, for suspending EU negotiations with Turkey.

It's the ministry's hope that Turkey would stay on the path of democratic development, while progress on the road to the EU depends mostly on its progress, the Slovenian Press Agency (STA) reported.

"How fast Turkey moves towards the EU depends on its progress in meeting accession criteria in line with the EU's legal order. We expect Turkey as a membership candidate will follow high standards and practices in the field of human rights and safeguarding of democracy and respect the constitutional order and the rule of law," STA quoted the ministry as saying.

"We also expect that cooperation between the EU and Turkey in the field of migrations will continue in line with the reached agreement and action plan," the ministry added.

Moreover, the ministry stressed Turkey's importance for stability in the region, adding, "we wish that the situation in the country stabilise and normalise as soon as possible and that Turkey continue along the path of democratic development and participate in the addressing of key issues in the region."
