Relatives of slain Palestinian teen arrested, indicted over various offenses

Two family members of a Palestinian teen from East Jerusalem killed by Jewish extremists two years ago were charged on Sunday with various offenses, the Israeli police said.
Mohammed Abu Khdeir, 21 years old, and Nasser Abu Khdeir, 19 years old, were arrested on June 27 by the Israeli police and the Shin Bet Security agency over multiple offenses, and they were indicted by a Jerusalem district court, police spokeswoman Luba Samri said in a statement.
Among others, the two are charged with hurling rocks and Molotov cocktails at Israeli security forces and towards a Jerusalem light rail station, attempted assault of police officers, public disturbance and discharging a weapon in a residential area, according to the police.
The two suspects, residents of the Palestinian neighborhood of Shuafat in East Jerusalem, are relatives of 16-year-old Mohammad Abu Khdeir, who was killed by three Jewish extremists in July 2014. They carried out the alleged acts during the months following the murder, police said.
One of the attackers, Yosef Ben David, was sentenced to a life sentence plus 20 years in prison in May over the murder. The two other attackers received a life sentence and 21 years in prison, respectively, in November 2014.
Abu Khedir's murder took place a month after three Israeli teenagers were abducted and killed by Hamas militants near Hebron in the West Bank in June 2014, which some believe triggered the summer war of that year in the Gaza Strip.
Israel occupied the East Jerusalem, West Bank, Gaza Strip and Golan Heights territories during the 1967 Mideast War. It annexed East Jerusalem, home to more than 300,000 Palestinians, in 1981, in a move deemed illegal by the international community.
Israelis and the Palestinians have been mired in a wave of unrest since October 2015, claiming the lives of 34 Israelis and 220 Palestinians.
Israeli security forces cracked down enforcement and carried out extensive operations against Palestinian suspects in East Jerusalem and the West Bank in the past 10 months, as the wave of violence persists. Endit
