Kenyan police seize cocaine allegedly worth 3 mln USD

Kenyan police on Friday seized a haul of cocaine allegedly worth over 3 million U.S. dollars at the port of Mombasa.

The container was intercepted upon arrival at the port on transit to Uganda from Venezuela. Security officers are currently verifying the four containers at the regional port for possible more drugs.

Documents indicate 18 containers were loaded at Santos port in Brazil on June 20. Each container was loaded with 520 bags of brown sugar.

Regional police boss Francis Wanjohi said the drugs had tested positive and a major investigation was underway to apprehend the owners.

"Our officers received intelligence reports about four suspicious containers. They were isolated for verification by multi-agency team which discovered the cocaine hidden in one the container," said Wanjohi.

Sources indicate that the police were tipped off by Interpol about the containers. The containers were seized immediately after the ship docked at the port on Wednesday.

The port of Mombasa has in the past been used as transit port for drugs headed to Europe and Asia. Last year, President Uhuru Kenyatta witnessed the destruction of a ship laden with heroin valued at 13 million dollars. Endit
