At least three people were killed and two others were wounded on Thursday in an explosion at a defense enterprise in Ukraine's northern Sumy region, the press service of the regional Military Prosecutor's Office said in a statement.

The blast occurred at about 4:30 p.m. local time (GMT 1330) at the testing station No. 2 of the State Scientific Research Institute of Chemical Products (SSRICP), which is a scientific branch of the Ukrainian state-run defense company Ukroboronprom, the statement said.

According to preliminary information, the explosion happened during an operation to unload munitions, which were brought to the testing station for utilization, it said.

Local police and prosecutor's office have launched an investigation into the accident.

According to the Ukroboronprom, the SSRICP is involved in designing and developing ammunition; developing formulas, technologies and facilities for the production of industrial explosives; and developing technologies for recycling ammunitions and their parts. Endit
