The Albanian government and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) signed a financing agreement to support Albanian agribusiness, the Albanian Daily News reported on Wednesday.

In a joint statement with EBRD President Suma Chakrabarti, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama said the agreement was vital to supporting the sector in Albania.

"Today, the village faces a new phase of development, as more support will be given to the agricultural sector through this project that will provide more opportunities to all those who want to invest in the countryside," said Rama.

"It is a program that brings together the government and some commercial banks, which, thanks to the EBRD and the government, will be willing to lend to people who will want to invest in the villages. This program will be an added value in the way that we have opened to switch from agriculture of pennies into the agriculture of investments, with a clear vision," said Rama.

Chakrabarti said: "The Albania Agribusiness Support Facility is an excellent example of how a coordinated approach by several actors can produce a whole that is greater than the sum of its parts. We are particularly grateful to the government of Albania for its commitment and the financial sector for its support." Endit
