Passenger ship, train services in S China halted ahead of typhoon

Xinhua, July 26, 2016 Adjust font size:

Passenger ship and train services between Guangdong and Hainan provinces in southern China were halted Tuesday as local authorities braced for the third typhoon of the year.

Typhoon Mirinae formed at 11 a.m. Tuesday in the South China Sea and was forecast to make landfall on the east coast of the island province of Hainan Wednesday morning.

The typhoon is expected to bring strong gales and heavy rain to Hainan and southern Guangdong, local meteorological authorities said.

All passenger ships across the Qiongzhou Strait, between Hainan and Guangdong, were ordered to stop service as of Tuesday noon out of safety concerns, said local transport authorities.

Meanwhile, trains in and out of Hainan were also stopped due to the suspension of the train ferry service.

Heavy rain on Tuesday night is expected to affect over 20 flights at Meilan Airport in Haikou, capital of Hainan, according to the airport operator. Endi
